The Dark Knight Review First Draft Essay Example

The Dark Knight Review First Draft Essay Example The Dark Knight Review First Draft Essay The Dark Knight Review First Draft Essay What comes to mind when you hear the word Batman? A dark figure looming in Gothams alleys? Adam West and Burt Ward Whamming and Powing their enemies? Or possibly one of the greatest films of the decade? Its fair to say that since the 70s,the original comic character Batman has changed( maybe develop this point), reincarnated with many different looks, and the outcome in my opinion is too camp or too dark. In his latest film, the director Christopher Nolan, seems to have the balance just right in The Dark Knight.( try to vary the opening of sentences) The film starts as a heist movie, a bank raid masterminded by the Joker (Heath Ledger), which is apposite as Heath Ledger steals every scene that hes in. Christian Bale also does a great performance (can you improve expression here)as Batman/ Bruce Wayne. However it seems that one of the reasons for Heath Ledger being hailed as the star is the contrast between the Joker and Batman that he brings to the role. Batman is very dark and serious (some might say, boring) and in a way that makes him boring; the Joker however is just insane, with his purple suit and constantly changing stories about how he got his scars. (Amoral and psychopathic , he explains ) and he evens mentions in the film how he will just commit homicide for no reason at all and that he just does things. He is, in terms of the 9/11 analogy, not just a terrorist but worse, an anarchist who just kills and destroys for fun. He is very creepy and completely mesmerising. The film also features Harvey Dent played wonderfully by Aaron Eckhart who is Gothams clean-cut DA who believes in justice and makes a stand against the mob and corruption; surprisingly enough there are a lot of attempts to kill him by the Joker. There is a (The clichà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½d love triangleis guaranteed to win approval from sections of the audience) love triangle in the film between Batman, Rachel (Maggie Gyllenhall) and Harvey Dent. Rachel is Bruces oldest friend and she knows that he is Batman, but she feels that Gotham will always need Batman and so that is why she chooses Harvey over Bruce. (comment on her moral stance. Is it convincing?) Gary Oldman (stars in the film) delete? as Jim Gordon, head of Gotham police department, clashes with Harvey Dent as they both have different ways of handling criminals. Jim Gordon is literally law and Harvey Dent is literally Order. The Dark Knight is a Batman morality tale turned up to 11- exploring the nature and corruption of power, the organization of society in crisis, individual freedom versus collective security, and (most interestingly of all), its allusions to the Roman Empire. If Harvey Dent is a Caesar figure, then the Joker is Caligula. ( The semi-colon is not used to introduce a list. It allows you to add a new sentence related to your first without separation by a full stop.) Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are also in the film (it really is a star studded cast), Michael Caine plays Alfred Bruces Butler, best friend and assistant. ( The inclusion of Michael Caine alongside Morgan Freeman in this star studded cast allows Hollywood to emphasise Alfreds Englishness. One of the greatest British actors of the last thirty years, his iconic London accent will surely intrigue an American audience)It seems that Hollywood really wanted to emphasize that Alfred was English and so they chose one of the greatest actors of all time with a very thick London accent, (in case youre wondering Danny Dyer was not second choice for the role), he is probably the best Alfred compared to other actors who have taken on the role before.(if this is your opinion then be more assertive. Reviewers generally are.) Morgan Freeman plays (as)Lucius (avoid repetition of verbs like plays)Fox the man who essentially runs Wayne Enterprises and is one of Bruces many friends; he also has the v ery exciting job that all boys dream of being (doing/achieving) when they are grown up: the creator of Batmans gadgets and weapons. The film explores many themes: batman represents hope; he is incorruptible. Harvey Dent symbolises fate or chance.; Rachel symbolises love as all the males fall for her and loyalty is .. The film (explores)(has) many themes( in it) and it is almost as if with each character representing represents on of those themes, Batman for hope, as he is incorruptible; Harvey Dent for chance, as he carries around a coin with him to help him make decisions; Rachel for love as it seems Batman, Harvey Dent and even the Joker have all taken a fall for her; Alfred stands for loyalty as he has served Bruce Wayne since he was a child and raised him when his parents were dead; the world would be a much better place if everyone were like Alfred! The special effects in the film are very impressive. One of the more breath taking examples is Two Face who is half man, half burns. Half of his face is that of Harvey Dent, the other half is severe burns. This signifies goes with the 50:50, chance, toss a coin theme of Harvey Dent; in fact Two Face uses the same coin to decide whether to kill someone or not. There is also a contrast made between Harvey Dent and Batman as they are both fighting the same enemy, Harvey Dent does this in court and Batman does this in the streets. However Batman is less a person, more an idea of the upholding of the law. ( This used to be fine but) delete? Christopher Nolan suggests that the citizens are restless and the heroes need to come from within society not those conspicuously outside it, (9/11 heroes were the firemen and police officers of New York), and in fact the film is full of images that mirror the havoc after 9/11. One other contrast made in the film is that between the Joker and Batman; at first you may think that they are total opposites but then you find that actually they are both similar. They are outcasts, freaks as the Joker says (in the film) to Batman When they dont need you any more theyll hunt you down. In addition Bruce Wayne and Batman are total opposites; Batman is a vigilante who dedicates his life to fighting for good, and Bruce Wayne on the other hand is a wooden, envious, charisma free pompous businessman. The Dark Knight is more of a hero movie than a superhero movie, as in it is far more realistic; Batman cant fly or shoot web out of his hands but he can make things explode! But this isnt just (can you improve expression here) with the Dark Knight. Batman has always been an outcast to over ? superheroes as there is in fact nothing super about him; he is just up to his neck in gadgets. If all the superheroes went to school together Batman would be the one sitting alone at lunch, while Spiderman and Superman sat at the table with the popular kids. Also other films released recently have had a big (significant) effect on how it was directed, for example the action in Bourne films are (is) very similar to the action in the Dark Knight,( but it is not a bad thing.. can you improve expression here) it is not uncommon to hear a gasp while you are watching the scene where a Juggernaut does a front flip or where a whole building is blown up. The question of individual freedom versus collective security (a question thrown up by 9/11) is brought into case, when BatmanBruce Wayne invents a device which can monitor everyone in the city using their phones. It was created with the intent of finding the Joker and stopping him from claiming anymore lives; the only person who can operate it however is Lucius Fox, who feels that there is something morally wrong with it. He chooses to use it only once and then he makes Batman promise to destroy it; he agrees. This is also (reminiscent of ancient Rome)similar to the Caesar idea. When the enemies were at their gates, the Romans would choose one man to have power over them so that they could defeat their enemies; they had to give up freedom and democracy to survive and when the battle was won that one man would go back to his previous position. However the last man that the Romans chose used the power they had given him to rule over them. His name was Caesar. This was what Lucius was worried would happen to Batman if he kept that device. A phrase, which is often used in the film, is You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. In fifty years time, there will have been countless incarnations of Batman. Some will be good some will be bad, some will feature Robin, some without him; well see familiar faces of villains and well also see some new evildoers. But one thing is certain! (about these films. delete?) None will be as good as The Dark Knight.

Classic Chemical Volcano - Ammonium Dichromate

Classic Chemical Volcano - Ammonium Dichromate Vesuvius Fire Introduction The eruption of an ammonium dichromate [(NH4)2Cr2O7] volcano is a classic chemistry demonstration. The ammonium dichromate glows and emits sparks as it decomposes and produces copious amounts of green chromium (III) oxide ash. This demonstration is simple to prepare and perform. The decomposition of ammonium dichromate commences at 180Â °C, becoming self-sustaining at ~225Â °C. The oxidant (Cr6) and the reductant (N3-) are present in the same molecule. (NH4)2Cr2O7 → Cr2O3 4 H2O N2 The procedure works well in both a lighted or darkened room. Materials ~20 grams of ammonium dichromatesand tray or ceramic tile, for use in ventilation hood OR5-liter round bottom flask and porcelain filtering funnelgas burner (e.g., Bunsen) ORbutane lighter or match, for use with flammable liquid (e.g., ethanol, acetone) Procedure If you are using a hood: Make a pile (volcanic cone) or ammonium dichromate on a tile or tray of sand.Use a gas burner to heat the tip of the pile until the reaction begins or dampen the tip of the cone with a flammable liquid and light it with a lighter or match. If you are not using a ventilation hood: Pour the ammonium dichromate into a large flask.Cap the flask with a filtration funnel, which will prevent the majority of the chromium (III) oxide from escaping.Apply heat to the bottom of the flask until the reaction begins. Notes Chromium III and chromium VI, as well at its compounds, including ammonium dichromate, are known carcinogens. Chromium will irritate the mucous membranes. Therefore, take care to perform this demonstration in a well-ventilated area (preferably a ventilation hood) and avoid skin contact or inhalation of the materials. Wear gloves and safety goggles when handling ammonium dichromate. References B.Z. Questions Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Questions - Assignment Example This seemed like a very difficult proposition for my high school and college years. Within the online environment, I could use the strategy of setting small tasks for myself that need to be completed within the allocated time. I can also put deadlines so that my tasks get accomplished in a quick and easy way. I have known a friend who is never able to manage time no matter how hard he tries. The differences that I have noticed in him have included the fact that he is always rushing for things and he usually asserts his own self in a much less manner about things as I do. The result is that he usually ends up being late on most of the occasions. The biggest time management challenge that I face at the moment is of managing deadlines. These deadlines create problems for me since all of them are usually one after the other and thus my mind is always in a loop to solve the anomalies which exist. The strategy that I can make the best use of is taking one deadline at a time and working to full effect towards the completion of the task at hand. This will make me go with the flow and not to rush up things (Sternglass 1997). An active learner is a person who is proactively consistent with his learning endeavors. A passive learner, on the other hand, tries to learn where there is a dire need to study and get acquainted with the different study regimes. I am an active learner since I remain abreast with the changing times. 6-Describe how you usually feel when you take a test-your emotions (positive and negative) and level of confidence. If you usually experience negative emotions when you take a test, describe how youd like to feel instead. Be as specific as you can. I usually feel very good when I test my emotions. I usually experience positive emotions whenever I take a test since I am always ready and willing to take a test. Since I want to achieve the best possible grades, I am always geared to give in my very best and this

Lyrical Ballads and Hamlet Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Lyrical Ballads and Hamlet - Essay Example he genuineness of the actions taken by Gertrude as a female character, it is still evident that Shakespeare tries to create a realization of this character as a human being (Stephen 1). Therefore, this paper attempts to scrutinize the extent to which self-hood can be attained through the use of female characters as depicted by Shakespeare in Hamlet and The Female Vagrant by Wordsworth. The realization of the human nature in Gertrude is observed when she drinks the poisoned wine that was prepared by Claudius, her husband, for Hamlet. Looking at this incident critically, it is evident in Act 3 that Gertrude came to herself and felt the guilt behind all the evils she was doing. For instance, it is possible that Gertrude had an affair with Claudius even while she was still married to King Hamlet and probably this is why the marriage between her and Claudius worked out so fast after the King’s death. Moreover, it may still be possible that Gertrude participated actively in secrecy towards the murder of her husband since from the play; she does not seem to consider the claims of her son that his uncle murdered his father, the King of Denmark (Stephen 3). Some of the actions of Gertrude seem to be powered by her wish and ambition to retain her station in the palace and her status as the Queen of Denmark (Stephen 4). These are valid human ambitions, and every other human is bound to be filled with the desire to maintain a royal status. It is therefore not surprising that Gertrude would be willing to do everything to see to it that she retains her status as the Queen of Denmark. What makes this ambition all wrong is going to the extreme; being ready even to see her husband die and start having sex with another man even before long after her husbands death creates a lot of suspicions (Stephen 4). However, despite all the bad things that Claudius did, she finally admitted that she was wrong, although she did not use spoken language to regret her deeds, but her actions

What Achieving a Degree Means to Me Essay Example for Free

What Achieving a Degree Means to Me Essay Hello my name is ______________ I am a twenty nine year old married mother of two. Ive been married for twelve years and I have an eight years old boy and a two years old girl. Since I was nineteen years old in the fall of 1991 Ive attempted to earn a college degree attending first Tarrant County Junior College and second Weatherford College stop and starting back again several times over the years trying to reach my goal. In the summer of 1995 when my oldest was two my husband and I moved our mobile home on to new land, which required my assistance helping out financially. I started working for a great company that I loved, Auto Rail Services of Texas they are an afflation of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway were I worked part time in the evenings doing data entry. Six months later I started working full time as the assistant office manager in charge of the day-to-day operations. I was sent to Tarrant County Junior College to gain a certificate in Microsoft Office applications. I continued to advance with in the company and enjoyed working there but in the July of 1998 the company suffered financially when Ford Motor Company moved there business to Union Pacific Railway, which caused downsizing in the company I was laid off. I contemplated going back to school after this but couldnt financially afford to stop working full time. The following October I became pregnant with our second child and after her birth my husband and I decided to downsize our financial situation so that I could remain home with the baby. When the child was seven months old I took a part time position in my aunts security company where I assisted in the office and was able to bring my child with me. Not long after my aunts company was forced to go out of business, which caused me to relay on unemployment compensation, threw Texas Workforce Commission there I was informed I could return to college and receive assistance with childcare. I began all the necessary proceedings for the program and was informed before I could actually get the assistance I would need to pass the TASP test a mandatory test required before you are eligible to receive a degree in the State of Texas. Having passed all but the math section of the test I decided I would take a preparatory tasp math class. The next six months I attended two such classes and in August of 2001 was successful in pass the math portion of the tasp. In June of that same year our home suffered water damage from a roof attempting to be put on but not finish before a storm hit water leaked in every where causing on the ceilings in the home to cave in. From June until September when were living in a hotel awaiting the finish of our home. Having so much going on at that time I decided not to attend college that fall. I am currently enrolled at Weatherford College 9 semester hours. Do the all the kayos this summer I was never able to update Texas Workforce Commission with my status and to ask for assistance with childcare. I had qualified for a seven hundred and fifty dollar federal Pell grant, which barely covered the costs and enrolled. I took a part time position as a tutor for Fort Worth Independent School District and I have received assistance from two family members with childcare on a temporary bases. Now that I have introduced myself and caught you up on my life history I would like to start telling you how strongly I feel and how important it is to me that I reach my goal of obtaining a college degree. I am going after a degree in the business field and I hope to eventually get a master degree as well. I know that people say that being a mother is a great accomplishment in itself. Dont get me wrong I too know it is, but sometimes is just not enough for some of us I just happen to be one of those some bodies. I love being a mom first and foremost but growing up as a young girl I always wanted and even thought that for sure I was gone be a great something or do something grand in life just what that was though I didnt quite know. Life some how takes you this way then that way and you sometimes end up off course as though you had a sail on our back a the wind was just drifting you around through life. Then some times being stubborn headed and getting way a head of yourself also contributes to blowing you way off course but you manage to grow in time and slowly start to see the way back on course but getting back on course isnt as easy as getting off course was. Even though it takes a slow, long and hard course back you get there you just stay strong, driven, and wanting it oh so bad. When the day finally comes that I do have my degree in hand and decided after all that maybe being a moms is grand enough I would at least have the self-satisfaction of know I did it I reached my ultimate goal and knowing the pleasures that come along with it such as independence, and knowledge gained. No longer needing to worry if anything ever happened would you be able to survive on your own, care for your children and maintain your lifestyle. How great it would feel to hang a plaque on the wall showing your accomplishment for all to see especially your children after all how could you expect them to accomplish such a task if you yourself never did. It has recently come to my attention the importance of just why I need this knowledge see I realized that one day my children would need my help with a school assignment and should be able to assist them. I need to be an example not to mention being able to keep up with current events around the world, the local economy as well as government issues such as politics. I say forget that I am not going threw life blind I want to always have at least one eye open at all times. That little voice that I use to hear inside of me telling me you are going to do something grand well shes getting louder and its time to listen. I know that over the course of my life I havent always made the right decision or took the right course or maybe even done some things a little backwards but I have always been able to see the light open up my eyes and see things for what they really are and find my way back around again. Some times it takes time, time to grow, to grow up, and to stop being so darn stubborn. Then it also takes just plan old school of hard nocks were you just plan have to live and learn for yourself. Ive lived and Ive learned knowledge is power and theres nothing you cant accomplish or learn once you try. Here is some things Ive learned over the years some even by mistake like getting married, buying your first home, land, a car, furniture, going to college and maintaining a fulltime job to support your household, doing your taxes, becoming a mother, attending college and being a mother, credit cards, mortgages, real estate taxes and insurance. Losing your credit, burial of a loved one after watching them die, to winning, to loosing, to finding new things out about yourself your crafty, creative, and resourceful, remodel your own home from tile, to drywall tape, bed, and texture, to cabinets and counters, to paint, you even learn over the years about the mechanics of cars these are just a few examples of where knowledge has got me so far. For me having a degree means accomplishment, independence, and knowledge. If it takes me the rest of my life to accomplish my goal of a degree I will no matter what obstacles come my way. I would just like to end by saying thank you for being out there trying to help people accomplish there goals and dreams and for making it a little easier to do so.

Edgar Allen Poe :: essays research papers

â€Å"For the most wild, yet most homely narrative which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief. Mad indeed would I be to expect it . . . Yet, mad am I not – and very surely do I not dream. But tomorrow I die, and to-day I would unburthen my soul.† Thus the narrator begins to confess to murdering his wife in â€Å"The Black Cat†, just one of many fascinating creations from short story master and poet, Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Allan Poe was born on January, 19, 1809 in Boston, where his mother had been employed as an actress. Elizabeth Arnold Poe died in Richmond on December 8, 1811, and Edgar was taken into the family of John Allan, a member of the firm of Ellis and Allan, tobacco-merchants. After attending schools in England and Richmond, young Poe registered at the University of Virginia on February 14, 1826, the second session of the University. He lived in Room 13, West Range. He became an active member of the Jefferson Literary Society, and passed his courses with good grades at the end of the session in December. Mr. Allan failed to give him enough money for necessary expenses, and Poe made debts of which his so-called father did not approve. When Mr. Allan refused to let him return to the University, a quarrel ensued, and Poe was driven from the Allan home without money. Mr. Allan probably sent him a little money later, and Poe went to Boston. There he published a little volume of poetry, Tam erlane and Other Poems. It is such a rare book now that a single copy has sold for $200,000.00 In Boston on May 26, 1827, Poe enlisted in The United States Army as a private using the name Edgar A. Perry. After two years of service, during which he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant-major, he secured, with Mr. Allan's aid, a discharge from the Army and went to Baltimore. He lived there with his aunt, Mrs. Maria Poe Clemm, on the small amounts of money sent by Mr. Allan until he received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. It was during his later years at West Point that he showed a remarkable talent for writing. Exploring themes as diverse as spirituality, astronomy, science and depravity, Poe’s writing is as powerful and arresting today as when he was first published. Chemical Kinetics Lab Raport Paper

FE 106 GENERAL CHEMISTRY EXPERIMENT-3 CHEMICAL KINETICS PREPARED BY BURAK COBAN PURPOSE: In this experiment we will study the rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to form oxygen according to the net equation: 2H2O2 (aq) 2H2O(l) + O2 by measuring the rate at which oxygen evolved, we will investigate how the rate changes with varying initial concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and iodide catalyst. After we will study the affect of changing its concentration the rate oxygen evolution. At the end of experiment we will summarize our results by attempting to write a rate law for the reaction, showing the defences on the concentrations of H2O2 and I. THEORY: Chemical reactions can be fast (think of any explosion ) or slow . It is very important to understand what is affecting the rate of the reaction and what is the mechanism of the reaction with such knowledge, we can often control a reaction to proceed at just the speed we need. we can thus avoid an explosion or speed up a reaction t hat seems too slow. In this chapter we start out by discussing rates of reactions and the rate law.The rate law indicates the affect that the concentration of the reactants has on the reaction rate. In general, adding more of a reactant speeds things up (rather like pushing the gas pedal to put more gas into the car engine ). But how much faster is the reaction if say the concentration of a reactant is doubled ? the rate law will help us answer such equations. Another way to affect the rate of a reaction is to change the temperature. We refrigerate food to slow the rate of bacterial metabolism that can cause food to spoil. If we want food to cook faster, we increase the heat.We also look at why some reactions seem to need a â€Å"kick start,† although once started, they continue to react. We will examine the activation barrier to reactions and its implications. Rate laws and kinetics experiments also tell us a lot about the mechanism by which a reaction occurs. Understanding the mechanism gives us another way to control the reaction. This knowledge enables us to design better catalyst or to create new compounds (such as new pharmaceuticals) that will be more effective. Differential Rate Laws: In many reactions, the rate of reactions changes as the reaction progresses.Initially the rate of reaction is relatively large, while at very long times the rate of reaction decreases to zero. In order to characterize the kinetic behaviour of a reaction, it is desirable to determine how the rate of reaction varies as the reaction progresses. A rate law is a mathematical equation that describes the progress of the reaction. There are two forms of a rate law for chemical kinetics: the differential rate law and the integrated rate law. The differential rate law relates the rate of the reaction to the concentrations of the various species in the system.Differential rate laws can take on many different forms, especially for complicated chemical reaction. However, most c hemical reactions obey one of three differential rate laws. Each rate law contains a constant, k, called rate constant. The units for the rate constant depend upon the rate law, because the rate always has units of mole L-1 sec-1 and the concentration always has units of mole L-1. Zero – Order Reaction: For a zero order reaction, the rate of reaction is a constant. When the limiting reactant is completely consumed, the reaction abrupt stops. Differential rate law: R=k The rate constant. k , has units of mole L-1 sec-1. First – Order Reaction: For first order reaction, the rate of reaction is directly proportional to the concentration of ane of the reactants. Differential rate law: R = k[A] The rate constant, k, has units of sec-1. Second – Order Reaction: For a second reaction, the rate of reaction is directly proportional to the square of the concentration of one of the reactants. Differential rate law : R = k [A]2 The rate constant, k, has units of L-1 sec-1. MATERIALS: ? Funnel, Florence flask, Beaker, Pipette ? Thermometer, ring stand, ? Distilled water 0,2M KI, H2O and H2O2 ? Burette, Rubber stopper, rubber tubes. PROCEDURE: Part A: ? 10 ml 0,2M KI and 15 ml distilled water was taken the flask. ? Flask was swirled until the solution comes to the bath temperature. ? After that 5 ml % 3 H2O2 was added quickly and stopper the flask. ? One of us swirled the flask in the bath, other one observed the change of the volume. ? Other one recorded the time when approximately 2 ml of the gas was evolved. Part B: ? Same experiment was done by using; 10 ml of KI + 10 ml of H2O + 10 ml of H2O2 Part C: ? Same experiment was done by using; 20 ml of KI + 5 ml of H2O + 5 ml of H2O2DISCUSSION: In this experiment, we discussed the rate of reactions. Reaction rate changed with kinds of reactant. For example in part A we put 10 ml KI and 15 ml distilled water an the other hand; in part B we put 10 ml KI ,10 ml H2O and 10 ml H2O2. After we determined. We saw that part A is slower than part B for this reason we can say rate is changed by nature of reactants. Another important effect is temperature. If temperature is high value reaction finish quickly. Maybe our results were effected temperature Because we put flask in heat water and rate of reaction is faster than low temperature. REFERENCES: GENERAL CHEMISTRY:PETRUCCI & HARWOOD = QUESTIONS = 1. Chemical kinetics is the study of the speeds, or rates, of the chemical reactions. A small number of factors control how fast a reaction will occur. Investigation of these factors provides clues to the ways in which reactants are transformed into products in chemical reactions. Some of the factors that influence the rate of a reaction are: ? Concentration; ? Pressure (particularly for reactions involving gases); ? Temperature; ? Surface area (for reactions involving solids); ? Catalyst; 2. Philosophy of Love and Sex

Describe the three kinds of love: Eros, Philia and Agape Eros: †¢This is Greek term that refers to a type of love that is passionate, shows intense desire for something and is often referred to as sexual desires. Another word to describe this type of love is known as â€Å"Erotic. † As Plato writes: â€Å"he who loves the beautiful is called a lover because he partakes of it. † This quote explains that someone who admires the beauty of another is a lover because he shows the affection. The Platonic-Socratic explains that you can’t truly be friends with another after having sex with them. Philia: †¢Refers to the opposite sex and showing a tremendous amount of affection and appreciation towards friendship, parents, humanity. It should be a non-sexual relationship. Having friends is a good part of life. You need friendship to give you a notion to keep you happy to adjust to yourself. College Students Still Getting Waisted essays

College Students Still Getting Waisted essays College Students Still Getting Wasted College students everywhere like to forget their studies every weekend and go out Amy with their friends. You would be surprised by how many of them are coming back early hours of the morning after consuming large quantities of alcohol. This is what they do for fun, but they dont know the harmful side effects that alcohol has. Some students use alcohol to signify that they are becoming adults, some use it to cope with stress brought on by teachers, peers, and family, and some use it just to simply have fun. No matter why it is being used it is still alcohol abuse. I am arguing that alcohol abuse should not be happening. I know that no matter where I am I will be around it but I would just like to make others aware of the harmful consequences that come from abusing alcohol. Hopefully after reading this a binge drinker and an alcoholic can be easily detected, prevented or helped. A binge drinker is someone who drinks five or more drinks in one sitting period, in other words this is the person standing next to the keg or refrigerator at parties, so he can have easy access to the alcohol when he finishes his drink. Most binge drinkers consider themselves to be light or moderate drinkers, though they notice they are usually drinking more than others. Members of fraternities and sororities report the most common cases of binge drinking among college students. High school students who are binge drinkers are more likely to apply to schools that have a reputation of being a party school as opposed to a school with the best educational background. Underage college students report that alcohol is easy to maintain and that they only drink for one reason, to get drunk. Even teachers can detect a binge drinker because they are the kids who are always missing class and when they do go they are late or unprepared. The Top 6 Things You Should Never Sacrifice For Any Job

The Top 6 Things You Should Never Sacrifice For Any Job We all want that same astronomic rise to the top. But there are a few standards we should not be willing to compromise in the interests of success. Here are 6 examples of things not worth sacrificing on the altar of the corporate ladder. Your BackboneDon’t let yourself be abused, ridiculed, belittled, or harassed. There are plenty of systems in place to protect employees from these sorts of things. Show that you have a little backbone and some unflappable dignity and take advantage of them. At very least, you’ll be helping to ensure the next person doesn’t suffer similar maltreatment.Your SoulIt’s not all about the Benjamins. Success won’t be worth much if you’ve sold your soul to get it. Remember that your self worth is not tied to the size of your paycheck, or the fanciness of your car or your apartment. Not everyone can have a private jet. If you’re ever tempted to do something mercenary just to get paid, don’t. Take the high road instead. You can’t buy happiness. And once you spend your integrity, it’s very hard to build it back.Your Self-RespectIt’s important to fit in to your workplace culture, and to espouse the kinds of values your bosses emphasize. But doing something that feels wrong or abhorrent in any way to you just because you feel it’s what’s expected of you? That sucks. If you start to hate yourself for conforming to the questionable standards of others, then start looking for another job. Staying isn’t worth it.  Your IntegrityYour values are important. Shedding them out the window on your way to the top of the heap? Lame. Loyalty, honesty, empathy, graciousness†¦ these are important things that probably helped get you where you are. Protect them at all costs. If you have a hard time figuring this one out, make a list of the values most important to you and tack it up somewhere you will see it often. If you ever feel in danger of compromising any one of them, stop what you’re doing and re-strategize. When you still like yourself at 80, you’ll be glad you did.Your HealthIn the savage quest to succeed, it’s so easy to give up on all the so-called creature comforts like whole, healthy foods, nutrition, exercise, sleep, self-care. The list goes on. Take stock of your health and then do a thorough realigning of your habits. What good is success if you’re too exhausted, depleted, depressed to enjoy it? A work-life balance is important and will keep you fresher and sharper longer.Your PurposeYou’re so busy trying to get to the top of the next horizon that 5 or 10 years have gone by and you don’t remember why you went in this direction with such tenacity in the first place. Remember to have a bigger goal- your calling, if you will- and keep that goal in sight. Try and make every move somehow in service of this greater dream. Ask yourself where you want to be in 25 or 50 years, and make sure you’re taking steps, however incremental, to get there.

Best friends and archenemy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Best friends and archenemy - Essay Example The paper will analyze the relationship that exists between two contrasting extremes in our lives, our best friend and archenemy. Growing up each individual develops a keen interest in two people in his or her life, the best friend and the archenemy. The majority of people only relate relationships to the positive feelings we possess towards other individuals, however, in our subconscious mind we share our bond with our enemies. Some might even have a closer bond with their archenemy than their best friend. The archenemy has a vital role in each person’s life as he influences the decisions one makes and the way in which one behaves. The constant competition with the enemy is a driving factor for many individuals and yet they can spend their entire lives without realizing it. Best friends have a supportive role and play as a source of comfort and warmth for each individual. Enemies on the other hand bring out the competitive side of a person and push him or her to doing things they would be able to achieve without a stimulation factor. This shows the importance of an archenemy in a person’s life and how without this individual life would be very different and even worse than one might presume. Having the two in one’s life is like the day and the night. The essence and uses of the two times frames are different, we use the day to work, socialize with others and improve our social status. On the other hand, we use the night to sleep so we can have enough energy to vary out the activities that are essential in our lives. Such is the relationship between our best friend and archenemy. One provides us with the light and comfort meanwhile the other gives us the drive to excel in our lives. Without either of the two individuals, our lives and the measure of our success would be limited. A best friend picks us up when we are down, and is there to listen to us when nobody else will. He reassures us of our strengths and the good things that we have in our lives. The presence of our best friend makes us feel warm and comfortable even in the absence of words. A best friend is like a brother or sister and at times can be like a mother or a father. The archenemy is like an intruder, someone whose existence creates tension and increases your heart rate. In every situation he is always the target and the one to beat. He is like a catalyst in the reaction of life. There is no way one can truly achieve his full potential without being pushed or motivated. The archenemy also brings the joy and satisfaction that comes from a best friend. The victories one has over his rival can be even more welcomed than the good times he shares with his or her friend. As much as people might want to deny it, the archenemy is just as important as the best friend, and has an even larger role to play in some situations. Even in a movie there are two roles the good and the bad character. In the absence of a bad character, the hero is unable to shine or show his brilliance. He uses the negative attributes of the villain to capture the hearts of the audience and attain his heroic status. The characters need each other, just like each person needs both a best friend and an archenemy. The two are very different and yet so similar. They both make lasting impression in an individual’

American Imperialism (American History) Research Paper

American Imperialism (American History) - Research Paper Example It said that America was interested in the development of the countries in the western hemisphere and that any European country should not wield its imperialistic power in its domain. Though America was not as powerful as Great Britain or France in its powers at that time, it used the Monroe Doctrine to back its action of sending troops to Mexico against the French in 1866 and its acquiring of Alaska in 1867. One of the economic reasons for the foreign policy was to acquire more markets for American Industrial products. When one of American battleship exploded suddenly under the sea, US pointed its blaming fingers at Spain. The foreign policy made the US send troops to Cuba to fight against Spain domination of Cuba. William McKinley, the US president sent military troops to Cuba leading Spain and Us to declare war against each other. Eventually, Spain lost Puerto Rico and Guam to the US. Soon, America was contesting for the position of world power manifesting its power in the world scene. American journalist John used the term ‘Manifest Destiny’ in 1895, which was used to justify all actions of US in imperialism and expansion, acquisition of California and Alaska. As Michael Chimes says, that in the years that led to the Spanish American war, America saw the rise of ethnocentrism, manifest destiny, and Anglo-Saxonism. It was further fueled by nationalism. These gave the rationale behind America’s imperialism and foreign policy of the 18th and early 19th century. He discusses the philosophical underpinnings of the American Foreign Policy that led to Imperialism. He says: America’s rise to world power occurred in the fifty-year period between 1870-1920.   The Spanish-American War may be seen as the â€Å"point of no return,† the foreign policy event that conclusively committed us to imperial strength and a global presence.
